ABOUT THIS SERIES

Sacred Sexuality: A Series on Song of Songs

February 2018 – Present

If someone ever thought the Bible was boring, prudish, or dull, obviously they’ve never read Song of Songs. If you think of a stereotypical Christian, maybe go back in in history even; think of the puritans; and then, imagine them reading this book, it will make you blush – especially if you get past the way some of the English translators cleaned things up. This book can stir up all sorts of things, especially confusion. In fact, there’s some debate about the nature of this book, and why it’s in the Bible. There’s also some confusion about how it’s supposed to be applied. Which leaves us asking a question in this series.

What’s really going on here?

What is going on with the Song of Songs? Why is this book in the Bible?

This seems so inconsistent with what most people think should be a part of the biblical texts, right? The church, especially, is known for being prudish. For not talking about sexuality. For even suppressing sexuality. And then, we discover, right in the middle of this book, with it’s histories, and kings, and theology and songs of worship, and advice on life, and the teachings of Jesus, is a book of ancient Hebrew love poetry between two lovers.

So why is it then, smack in the middle of the Bible, there’s a book that is filled with sensuality, sexuality, and passion? What does this mean? And since it’s included; since it’s a part, then shouldn’t we be asking some bigger questions about what it might teach us? If this is in the Bible, could it be that this has a connection to our souls in a way that we’ve either misunderstood or missed out on completely? So what really is going on here?

When it comes down to it, we are alienated. We are homesick, and we are restless. And so we grasp for something more. This actually hasn’t fixed things, in fact it’s only made things more complicated.

It’s about something deeper. It’s always about something else. Something deeper. Something behind it all. In the center of this conversation and this book are 2 things… sex, and God. And those 2 things are connected. And they can’t be separated. Where the one is, you will always find the other. To make sense of the one, we have to explore the other.

Join us in this conversation and study of the book of Song of Songs.
